Revealing Prom Dresses

Have you ever noticed how the fashion industry impacts our lives? Not only in what we wear as individuals, but also what is acceptable in our society.

It is more the fashion industry than the religious sector that determines how much flesh revealed is acceptable. Because of the fashion industry companies find that they need to develop dress codes for office attire and schools need to also develop dress codes dictating what is appropriate to wear in the classroom.

When my daughter was a junior in high school she was asked to the junior/senior prom. She was very excited about her first big formal event. When we were looking for her dress she mentioned that the school had released rules about revealing prom dresses. She did not make it sound like it was any big deal so we did not discuss it further that day. On that day we noticed several strapless and backless dresses that would certainly fit into the category of revealing prom dresses, but we laughed about who would be brave enough to wear one of the dresses.

We did not find the perfect dress on our first outing so we made plans to go to another mall over the weekend.

The next day I attended a PTA meeting and could not believe how upset some of the parents were regarding the rules around revealing prom dresses. Parents were tossing around phrases like freedom of expression and other student rights. I made the comment that after seeing some of the dresses that were available in the stores I was glad that the guidelines were in place. Several of the dresses that my daughter and I saw were inappropriate for a teenage girl to wear to a school function. I saw the wording of the memo that the school had written regarding wearing revealing prom dresses. The wording simply directed students to reveal no more than would be revealed in a one piece swimsuit. To me this meant breasts covered, no mid drifts showing and the buttocks covered. I could not believe that the parents of teenage girls would want them exposing more than this at a school function.

My daughter found a beautiful sleeveless dress in beige. She wore one of my wraps that she has always liked. I am anxious to go to the grand march of the prom to see what the other girls are wearing. I know there will be some that will push the limit to the new guidelines the school has put into place.

In a full heart there is room for everything, and in an empty heart there is room for nothing.
