Sun Protection Hats

Our red, white and blue country never seems too concerned with the sun. Even though we know for a fact that the sun's harmful rays can and will lead to premature aging, sun spots, wrinkles, and often cancer, we still continue to frolic in it like mindless idiots.

Go figure that one out. Oh wait, we can't forget about the image issue at-hand. Most individuals are primarily concerned with being tan. They commonly think tan equals beautiful. Well guess what, the last time I checked; old, leathery and wrinkled wasn't that attractive. Looks like America needs a serious wake-up call. Bust out the sun block SPF35, the polarized shades, and the sun protection hats. The summer will be back before we know it.

Things are different over seas. Take the island of Taiwan for instance. I visited this country several years back, in 1994 to be exact, and they were definitely up on the sun protection hats and fair skin preservation. None of the women were trying to tan at all.

They strolled the sidewalks of Taipei with their sunglasses, parasols, and often sun protection hats. This was baffling to me at the time. I was only 18 years old and couldn't figure out why they weren't trying to tan. Even though I never got into tanning, I just assumed everyone else had to do it. When I asked a local, she told me that the women of Taiwan tend to avoid the sun like the plague. They could care less about tanning, and were much more interested in looking young as long as they can. Hmm, made sense to me. So why can't America learn from this example? Even as time passes and sun exposure is discouraged, people still continue to sun bathe and strive for rich dark tans to keep year-round. It's an enigma no doubt.

Do the research! Before you pick up the habit of sun bathing, read a few current articles on skin cancer. It is after all caused by the sun's harmful UV rays. Once you get the scoop, you might be interested in a few sun protection hats and some sun block after all. Preserve your youth and beautiful skin by keeping it out of the sun. When you do venture outside this summer, remember that much-needed sunscreen. It's well worth the small cost.
