After moving into a new home many people are faced with one of the worst challenges for a handyman. Trying to remove wallpaper left behind by the previous owners or tenants can be a nightmare.

This is particularly true if they were lazy and wallpapered over wallpaper. There are some handy tips that will help you get the wall down to a painted surface again. With some knowledge and some elbow grease you can get the job done.

Your first attempt should be at just ripping it right off. This might work if the person who applied the paper to the wall wasnt great at their job. If one corner isnt stuck to the wall, try and get your fingernail underneath. With any luck youll be able to simply pull it off. The chances of being able to remove wallpaper this easily are pretty remote though.

Next get a bucket of water and some sponges. Its great if you can find a helper to help you with this job.

Kids seem to love to remove wallpaper since its usually the only time their parent is asking them to destroy something. Wet the paper thoroughly with the sponges and then wait a few moments. Once its fully saturated you can begin to peel it off the wall. Using a putty knife helps with this approach as well. If there are indeed a few layers of paper on the wall, you may need a lot more water along with extra patience.

If the water isnt quite doing the job the way you want, you can add a solution to it that is designed to help loosen the adhesive. Liquid wallpaper remover is sold in many hardware stores and is easy to use. Its advisable that if you do decide to use a product like this to remove wallpaper that you wear latex gloves. The only reason is that people with sensitive skin might find the solution irritating to their hands.

A steamer works wonders when it comes to getting your wall back in shape after a bad wallpaper job. Buying a steamer can be done at the home improvement store but if you only have a small wall that you need to work on, you can always rent one. Youll need to be extra careful if you use this to remove wallpaper as the steam it emits can burn. For that reason its not a good idea to have any little ones helping. Be careful where you place the steamer in between applications to the wall as well.

Once the paper is off youll be amazed at how great the wall looks underneath. At this point a good wash with a mild soap is called for and then if you are planning on painting the wall, give it a sanding too. After that, you can paint the wall any color you desire and the wallpaper will only be a thankfully distant memory.
