Being a parent has been the most rewarding and the most challenging thing I have done in my life. Before I had children I would not have understood that statement, however after raising two sons and a daughter I feel qualified to make a few comments on parenthood.

Each child will reward you in different ways and each will challenge you. The best part of the job of parenting is that life never gets boring.

My oldest son and my daughter, who is the youngest, are similar in personality. My middle son has always had a mind of his own, and what a mind. He started asking questions from the first words he spoke. Not the typical why questions, but detailed how does this and that work type questions. Of course the answers would lead him to yet another question. My husband and I laugh that most of the questions and answers that we know we owe to our middle child. He kept us doing research until he was old enough to learn how to do it himself.

Exploring questions and answers is something very near and dear to my heart because I am a reference librarian. I have to admit that doing research on my sons questions and answers has been much more entertaining than providing references to the professors at the university I work for. The professors are into statistics and components of this that do not interest me, however my son comes up with very interesting topics. Unlike other bright children that tend to concentrate on one area or animal or topic, he has had an interest in everything. One day we will look up questions and answers to how a motor runs and the next day we will look into the life cycle of an eagle. He requests to go to many different places to check things out. Our other children cannot believe the field trips we take in a quest to find answers to their brothers questions. Some of the things they find interesting, but other topics are just weird to them. I am not sure where life will take our middle son, but I know that he will never be satisfied in his quest for knowledge. I hope he decides to become an educator because he has a gift for remembering facts and a great manner of teaching others about what he knows. With his great base of knowledge he would be a great asset to any school because he is not interested in only one subject matter and he has skills in several.
