The city is known for its large number of colonial homes and historic buildings on the waterfront. The city authorities have been careful in maintaining these properties to ensure their future. The area also has a high proportion of luxury mansions, testament to the economic success of the past, some of which are open to the public. Many prominent people have vacationed here in the summer, including President Kennedy and President Eisenhower.

The US Navy has strong connections with the area and the Naval War College, Naval Undersea Warfare Center and a US Navy Training Center are based in Newport Rhode Island. Seafaring is in the blood in this part of the world and the harbor is filled with commercial fishing vessels and pleasure craft of every kind.

The city has hosted the prestigious America's Cup yacht race on several occasions. The sport of tennis is also honored and the International Tennis Hall of Fame, commemorating star players over the years, is sited here.

There are many interesting attractions for visitors to explore. Newport Tower is an unusual round tower, built from stone. Situated in Touro Park, it is said to have been a working mill in the 17th century but its origins may go back much further. Fort Adams is a fortification going back to 1812 and was converted to a museum of yachting, tracing the history of boating in Newport Rhode Island. The Redwood Library and Athenaeum, founded in 1747, is the oldest public library in the United States and is housed in an imposing building, designed as a Greek temple. In addition to books, the collection includes art and artifacts.

Residents and visitors have plenty to do here. There is the opportunity to participate in various water sports or to chill on one of several beaches, both public and private. There is an exciting calendar of annual events, some of which are famous throughout the world. The Newport International Boat Show is very popular and has the perfect setting, given the area's maritime history. Film lovers support the Newport International Film Festival.

The two festivals that really put the city on the world stage are the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival. The Jazz Festival began in Newport Rhode Island in 1954 and has featured star musicians such as Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Ray Charles and Muddy Waters. The Folk Festival was co-founded by Pete Seeger and established a reputation with performances by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Johnny Cash.
