Many parents who have children with disabilities worry about what happens when their children reach adulthood. This is a legitimate concern that requires attention early on in the childs life.

Independent living centers are designed to help individuals who have disabilities thrive well into adulthood.

When a child who has a disability reaches his teenage years, parents can opt to start planning for his future as an adult. Included in the plan are different aspects of a persons adult life including transportation, finances, work and recreation. Working with independent living centers is an ideal way to pave a solid road for a child with a disability.

Independent living centers are based in the community. Most of these organizations are not residential so parents still need to have a plan for housing separate from the services offered by these organizations.

Independent living centers serve to help individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible.

Part of the services included in this kind of organization involve advocacy. Many people with disabilities require some help getting and maintaining certain services and they also need help dealing with some issues. Advocates that work through independent living centers serve as a voice for people who cant speak for themselves.

One of the most important services provided by independent living centers is transportation. Many adults with disabilities have the capacity to engage in ordinary, everyday activities. However, they might not be able to drive or use public transportation. Independent living centers help transport people to appointments, work and activities among many other places.

Funding for many independent living centers comes from the government. Federal and state agencies provide necessary funds to keep organizations like this thriving. There are over 500 independent living centers in the United States, which comes as a big surprise. I expected there to be many, many more.

There are many individuals who need the services offered by independent living centers. A person who has special needs has the capacity to work and thrive in a community but he will require some assistance. These organizations are designed to help a person who has a disability enjoy his ability to work and play in his environment.

Parents who have children with disabilities work hard to make sure that their children have all of the comforts that they need. One of the most pressing issues is what happens to a child with special needs after the parents are gone. Hopefully, more independent living centers will emerge to help this population live to its fullest potential.
