In Memory Of

Everyone has a family that they grew up in. Some people grow up in traditional families with mom and dad and possibly siblings.

Other people grow up in a single parent headed family. Other children are raised by grandparents or foster parents, no matter what your family or origin looks like the years spent maturing and learning have an impact on how we feel and behave as adults. For most people the concept of family brings to mind a support system that will always be there to turn to. No matter how tough things get the family will be there and when something good happens the first thought is to call a family member.

Recently in my husbands family we went through the death of his father. My husband has three brothers and a sister, all of whom are married. We were all at the bedside along with my husbands mom, when the death occurred. This is the first time I was present when someone passed away. It is quite a spiritual experience.

Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

It made me realize how very fine the line between life and death is. One minute the person you know and love is with you and the next they are gone. The body truly is just a shell that holds the human spirit.

The family decided that they wanted to do something in memory of their dad. Many ideas were brought up. We considered the more traditional ideas of donating money or items for the church in memory of him, but the church had recently received a huge donation from another family and did not have any great need. My father-in-law had been a member of several community organizations; however nothing immediately came to mind to donate in memory of him that would have pleased him. During the night of his memorial service we heard the same comment over and over from the people that came to express their sympathy. Each person remembered and commented on how much my father-in-law loved to fish. It seemed that when most people recalled him they thought of fishing. We decided that we would make improvements to the local boat landing in memory of him and have a memorial fund given to the city in his name to help maintain it. I know that he would have been very pleased at the sign that we have ordered which states that the boat landing is maintained in memory of him. It keeps his memory close to the lake that he loved to fish.
