Discount Lumber

It is no surprise to most people that the cost of building a house is proportional to the cost of supplies that you use. What most people don't know, however, is how much those supplies can vary in cost.

Without cutting corners, you can find discount hardwood lumber that will make your house much less expensive. You can find discount lumber for every phase of development from building the structure all the way through finishing the interior. You can even find discount hardwood floors if you look hard enough you just have to look. The problem is that discount building supplies are not for the easily discouraged. It can take months to find exactly what you need.

When I first started building a house, I didn't know about discount lumber. I assumed incorrectly that I was basically limited by the major wood suppliers around town. Because I was a fairly small purchaser, I could not buy in the bulk that allowed the major contractors to save a lot of money on building.

Then one day, I was walking by a warehouse. Outside, I saw a free lumber box filled with two by fours. There were literally dozens of pieces of wood, most of which looked pretty solid. They had been obviously torn out during some phase of renovation, and now they stood for any builder who wanted to use them. I knew that it would take me forever to find enough wood to build a house a couple pieces at a time, but it made me wonder if there were other places where I could find discount lumber in even greater bulk.

It turns out that almost any city will have a discount building materials supply store somewhere. The problem is that some of the stores are bigger than others. In the area where I was living, it was almost impossible to find enough discount lumber to finish a house. When I was first starting off, in fact, I had to use a combination of discount lumber and new wood to build a frame up. At first I was a little bit worried about this approach, but soon, I found more sources for discount lumber. I even went to a few demolition sites to scavenge the remains, and what I found was quite a lucrative hull. It was a lot of effort, but finding discount materials allows you to cut the price of building a house in half. That is definitely worth the effort.
