Cleaning Grease

Inevitably when you cook you are going to end up with splatters and spills. For the most part if you tend to an accident in the kitchen quickly, the mess can be cleaned up in a snap.

However, if you are dealing with stubborn grease stains, thats a bit more challenging. There are effective ways of cleaning grease and the approach you take should really depend on the surface you are working with.

Cooking things like bacon and sausages always results in some spitting happening from the pan. Its the reason most of us stand back when we are making a breakfast of bacon and eggs for our families. Cleaning grease off clothing can generally be done with any one of the stain removers found in the laundry aisle of the supermarket. Another approach that works just as well is to pour some liquid laundry detergent directly on the spot a few minutes before you are going to throw it in the washing machine.

One note of caution though is to be certain the stain is out before you place the item in the dryer. The heat will make the stain permanent if its still there.

Cleaning that same grease off of cabinets isnt quite as simple. Over time the grease will harden and if you have wood cabinets you need to be careful about using anything abrasive so you dont damage the surface of the wood. A bottle of lemon oil works wonders when it comes to cleaning grease and its readily available. It also wont remove the finish that is already on the wood.

The cabinets arent the only place grease will land in your kitchen. The inside of your oven can get a layer of grease on it if you dont tend to it regularly. Many of us forget when we are cleaning the kitchen to also give the oven a wipe. If youve let it go a bit longer than you should have, you can use a store bought can of oven cleaner for cleaning grease. You simply spray it on, wait the time suggested and wipe it clean. This really does work wonders, although the fumes from the product can be unpleasant so be sure you open the kitchen window before you begin.

If someone spills a dish of food on carpet that can leave an unsightly stain particularly if the carpet is light colored. Cleaning grease from carpet can be done several ways. One approach involves using your iron and a brown paper lunch bag. After you cut the bag open, place it right over the grease stain and then use a hot iron. The heat from the iron will liquefy the stain and the bag will absorb it. Having the carpet professionally cleaned afterwards will help remove any residue that may have been left behind.

Grease may be a bit more frustrating to clean than other stains, but dont fret. With the right tools and some patience, you can get rid of that greasy stain for good.
