Automobile Lemon Law

There are times when I think that our manufacturing laws are only made to protect the manufacturer rather than the consumer. The fact that there are laws on the books to aid manufactures to sell substandard products is ridiculous.

It is irritating to know that legislation time on both the local and national level is spent to protect big manufacturing companies from the consumers of their products.

I first began thinking about this and doing some research because or our neighbors new car. They traded in a two year old vehicle for a new car. They spend six months of the year in Minnesota and six months in Florida. They wanted to have a new car to make their trip to Florida. They thought they would get a better trade in value for the two year old vehicle if it did not have so many miles on it. Also it was still under the manufactures warranty. The new car they brought home had issues from the start.

Different warning lights would come on for no reason. They took the car back to the dealer several times to have minor things adjusted. On the way to Florida the cruise control stopped working. Once they were in Florida they had the car into the dealer more than they had it in their driveway. They thought it should be covered under the automobile lemon law and they wanted another vehicle. They were told that the automobile lemon law is different in each state and since they purchased the car in Minnesota the Florida laws do not apply. They could not deal with Minnesota because they were presently in Florida.

My neighbor called me and told me how frustrating all of this was. I pointed out that the ironic thing about it was that the car was mostly manufactured in a state other than Minnesota or Florida. The automobile lemon law was protecting the manufacturer and their substandard vehicle, rather than the consumer that was out thousands of dollars and did not have a car that was reliable. After months of phone calls, letters and hours in the shop the dealerships in Florida and Minnesota finally came to an agreement and our neighbors received a different car. They had a good outcome, but most of their winter was spent trying to get reliable transportation for their drive back to Minnesota. It would make sense to me to have the automobile lemon laws be consistent in all the states since we are such a mobile society and since the majority of the vehicles are made in only a few states to begin with.

In terms of being late or not starting at all, then it's never to late.
