Audio equipment is cheaper and more powerful than ever, and the results are of a higher caliber. More importantly, higher-quality people are attracted to audio engineering schools. It isn't that they have more natural ability, but that many of them come in with experience. Sound recording software is everywhere, and your average teenager has played with it at least once or twice. Many of them were amateur audio engineers in high school and even middle school, remixing the music that they put together with their friends. By the time they get involved in a professional audio engineering degree program, they already have some practical knowledge of the subject.

Of course, there are some difficulties with modern audio recording.

Basically, there is much more to know than ever before. Sound engineering used to be a simple, straightforward occupation. If you wanted to get spatial effects, you would have to use a room specially set up by an acoustic engineer to get that effect. The actual audio engineering came down mostly to how you mixed the tracks together and what directions you gave the musicians. You would only have to know how to use a few machines to do it.

Nowadays, audio engineering is more complex and varied than ever before. There are dozens and dozens of audio sound recording programs, as well as analog and digital audio equipment to master. The best audio engineers even know a little bit of programming, allowing them to set up special customized effects when they need them. A lot of the stuff can be learned on the job, but the more you learn in your audio engineering program, the better qualified you will be.

Nevertheless, it is certainly not too much for one person to learn. In a few years of audio engineering classes, as a matter of fact, you can master all of the basic principles. You can learn everything about acoustics, sound recording programs, studio mixers and microphones, and even techniques to remix and restore old or flawed recordings. It is one of the most creative, exciting fields out there, and a really great place to start if you have always wanted a music career.
